Somalia’s first independent contemporary arts institution
We create space for artists and communities to explore who we are, what we carry and what we might become.
The Somali Arts Foundation (SAF) was founded in Mogadishu in 2020.
Over the past six years, SAF has grown from an idea into a home for creative expression, learning and exchange. In a landscape where spaces for the arts remain scarce, we have worked to build the relationships, trust and opportunities that allow creativity to flourish.
Our journey has been shaped by artists, young people and communities whose curiosity and imagination continue to expand our sense of what is possible.
Through exhibitions, artist residencies, workshops, screenings and public programmes, we support artists to develop their practice and bring their work into conversation with wider audiences. At SAF House and through our work in communities and public spaces, we bring people together around questions of identity, memory, loss, healing and belonging. We place particular emphasis on opening opportunities for women, young people and underrepresented voices to shape cultural life.
Our work is rooted in Somalia’s rich artistic heritage and the vitality of its contemporary expression. We understand art as an essential part of civic life: a way to ask difficult questions, encounter different perspectives and imagine a shared future. This belief guides our commitment to artistic freedom, dialogue and the patient work of building an independent cultural institution.
Six years on, SAF is still becoming. What began in Mogadishu is the first chapter of a wider ambition: a future in which artists across Somalia have the space, support and freedom to create, and communities can participate fully in cultural life. We continue with the conviction that the future of Somalia may exist in the imaginations of its artists.
